My wife has a Toyota Rav4 and whilst not a gas guzzling 4x4 i have no interest in what he does.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, released further details on his 'Budget for Business' this afternoon, including the new 'Stealth' tax for raising revenue from anyone wearing a hoodie to hide their identity from CCTV, and a new initiative for taxing the air that we breath.

 

Having been to Japan recently, the chancellor was very taken with the Oxygen/Pure Air canisters and face masks freely on sale all over Japan, and popular with the locals as a way of getting around the cities in the smog. These canisters, perceived as a luxury item, attract the top sales tax in Japan, and gave Gordon the idea for this new tax.

 

"We'll be fitting the population with tracking devices, based on GPS, to track movements and breathing habits", said the Chancellor, "so, basically, every step you take, every move you make, I'll be watching you."

"Oh can't you see," he continued, "you belong to me. How my poor heart aches, every step you take. Every breath you take, every claim (or tax credit) you stake, I'll be watching you".

When spending 10's of thousands of pounds on a big 4x4, especially when the money is company owned, an extra 400 quid isn't going to stop anyone buying a 4x4 or even considering an eco friendly car. There needs to be a mileage penalty charge for anyone owning an unnecessary 4x4. There is a local private school near me that has literally dozens of big black Range Rovers parked outside at 3.15, with chav wowen driving them. They have no idea how to manoevre them, and even less of an idea about any other road users.

That way we would all pay proportionally to the pollution we cause, using our cars less or driving more economically would cost us less. El Dingo and others have commented that the fair way to tax exceesive gas guzzlers is through fuel tax even to the point of doing away with tax discs. Unfortunately there are two main problems here.

 

The tax disc procedures are a mechanism which can be used to keep track of vehicles and keep dangerous vehicles off the road, or should be if we had enough active traffic police to make it work.

 

The other is that owners of gas guzzlers do not, by and large, give a toss about CO2, the cost of running a vehicle or, for that matter, anyone else at all, so it will not make much difference either way.

 

On the subject of our 'beloved' chancellor soon to be leader.

 

I was going through my mothers finances the other day. She's pushing 88 and needs somone to look after (no, not the other way) but cannot understand where all of her money is coming from.

I looked on it on the basis of how much someone on the minimum wage would have to earn to have an equivalent income including all benefits.

 

The answer is that a typical farm worker would have to work between 80 and 85 hours a week to be in the same position and he would probably have a family to provide for as well.

 

I think someone has lost the plot somewhere.

These are good points and well made.

 

As you say 'If' we had enough traffic police, and we really don't. That's why taxing fuel works - it doesn't need any secondary mechanism to make it work. Or any more bureaucracy (although incumbent socialist governments love bureaucracy, as the employees (for obvious reasons) often become lifelong socialist voters).

 

Unfortunately Galaxy owners are now seen as owners of gas guzzlers. Yes, even the diesel ones, which are also seen as dangerous, carcinogen generating polluters as well.

Just read in the paper this new high rate includes the 2.3 Galaxy, but only if first registered after March 2006.

Cattle produce 4% methane which according to some this is a greenhouse gas.

Never mined this so called global warming which I think is being well and truly over reacted by the meadia and being used by loads of politicians to get more money out of the tax payer, when perhaps the world is going through one of its warming cycles which its been doing since it was first formed all those millions of years ago. Just think if it was one of the cooling cycles they would be telling us to burn more coal, hydrocarbon fuels, feeding cows more ruffage to fart the methane out, running more electrical appliences and so it goes on.

I could go on but all you have to do is check the global temperatures on the NASA site then make up your own mind.

It wasn't that many years ago that it was all about saving the rain forests etc.

 

Don't hear a peep about them any more.

 

Why..? cos politicians have cottoned on to the fact that if they spew out facts and figures on 'global warming' they 'look' & 'sound' credible.

 

And of course being 'credible' brings a whole host of benefits. The biggest of which is money..!

 

Which is why America have finally joined the race so late in the game...... For years they have been poo pooing the very idea of global warming...... then all of a sudden the penny drops. Money.

 

I'm off to blat up the cul-de-sac in my G rated gas guzzler now. :lol:
